Oct 01, 2018 Mechanism of Action Chloroquine, a 4-aminoquinoline, is an anti-protozoal agent. The precise mechanism by which Chloroquine exhibits activity is not known. Chloroquine, may exert its effect against Plasmodium species by concentrating in the acid vesicles of the parasite and by inhibiting polymerization of heme. It can also inhibit certain enzymes by its interaction with DNA. Chloroquine is the generic form of the brand-name prescription medicine Aralen, which is used to prevent and treat malaria — a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite — and to treat amebiasis, an infection of the intestines caused by a parasite. Chloroquine is an anti-malarial drug available at pharmacies for people traveling to area with malaria risks. Note based on a RGCC chemosensitivity analysis I have seen at a German clinic, Hydroxychloroquine has been effective in killing the cancer cells of 5 out 7 patients that were tested.

For all uses of chloroquine: WARNING/CAUTION: Even though it may be rare, some people may have very bad and sometimes deadly side effects when taking a drug. Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.

Chloroquine acts exclusively in the erythrocyte stage of malaria parasites. The antimalarial mechanism of action from chloroquine has not been fully elucidated. Many theories have been developed to elucidate the chloroquine mechanism of action, including DNA binding and inhibition of various enzymes and/or transporters.
